Although humans have an incredible capacity for abstraction, we’re still a long way from fully understanding the biological foundations of our intelligence. Much of our knowledge about the brain comes from studying the mind of a cephalopod, a creature with a complicated brain that’s hard to pin down. In the case of the cephalopod, we can see the brain is composed of multiple lobes, each of which is specialized in a different function.
So while cranial engineering (the way the brain organizes itself) is still being researched, it is now more than a decade since scientists first discovered that we can actually build tiny, “cranial robots” that are able to move and operate without the help of any muscles.
The new cranial robot, called the Cranial Engine, is a tiny device designed to fit inside the skull of an animal and move around. It does this by having two pairs of tiny motors (made out of piezo-electric materials) that move along a series of tracks in the brain and a pair of tiny sensors that allow it to detect when it is exposed to the environment.

With cranial robots like these, it is possible to actually cause physical damage to a person’s brain. In fact, there are now three cranial robots which will allow you to remove a human brain. It is possible to remove the brain from someone who has been severely injured or killed. This is done by the use of a robotic arm and a drill. A person will be placed under general anesthesia so that she won’t feel anything, and then the brain will be removed from her body.
