Mobile hotspots tend to be a great thing for many reasons.
First of all, mobile hotspots are often a faster way to get online than a home connection is. Most people are too tethered to their computers to make a good experience on a mobile hotspot.
Mobile hotspots, however, are nowhere near as great as home connections. The same reason why the average American doesn’t have much of a chance at connecting to the Internet. Most people are tethered to their computers, or are in an apartment or condo that doesn’t have a phone line. Also, people don’t tend to have a lot of time as they work, go to school, or spend time with friends.
I personally use a hotspot, but its not my home, nor are most of my friends. If you cant do a hotspot, you might be able to do a home connection. The best internet connection, I think, is the one you have with your cable or DSL provider. Its the same reason why people have to rent expensive phones. In most cases, if you have a home connection you are able to make calls over the internet.
My cable provider (Satellite TV) does not allow a hotspot but has an internet connection. If I want to use a hotspot, I would either have to pay extra or find a way to connect to a hotspot that is not my home connection.
In this case, I don’t think that it’s necessarily the internet connection that’s the problem. It might be the provider. The company that provides the service might be having issues. I know in the past, the cable companies have been accused of not providing good service, but that doesn’t mean they’re doing something wrong.
I see this in my business too. My phone connects to the wireless network when I go for lunch, but I have my phone off wifi all day. I have no internet access at my desk, so I would have to get a hotspot.
There are two problems with this. First, wireless companies love to charge for access to their networks, so they often charge for “unlimited” data. Second, wireless companies have no problem charging for things like hotspot access—they just don’t give a crap about the people on the other end. Which is the case for the rest of the internet too, since I see the same thing on my business internet too.
These two problems are the same reason why so many people are using their wireless internet connections to stream movies and TV shows off of their iPhones, iPads, and other mobile devices. They are just not using their wireless internet connection to download games or music.
That’s why I am absolutely convinced that mobile hotspot and network connectivity will be a huge factor in the mobile gamer market. Gamers are going to need to download games and other media to their phones to play at home, and they will also need to connect to the network to download games from their friends.
